http://www.newsweek.com/id/223696

I read the article “Why Women Reject the Mammogram Recommendation” on Newsweek. It was published on November 20,2009 by Pat Wingert. The article was about women ages 40-50 not getting their mammograms as they should be at that age. They want to move the age to 50 because they think that when menopause occurs it is easier for women to get the best results on their mammogram tests. Another thing that they believe is they should lower the age because they think that when they do that it will help to early detection on breast cancer. But they researched it and found that nothing was effective to help the younger women, at least for now.

I think that it should be required that women should have to get mammograms done at certain ages. It will definitely help with the reduction in deaths and it will help lower the health concerns in our country. Another thing is it will not only benefit our country but it will benefit the women who are getting the mammograms by them knowing if they have breast cancer or not.

I think that the age should be moved up to 50, because they did say that after they get menopause the results are read better and it is easier for them. Another thing that they could do is find a tool that could be used for younger women if they really want to do the mammogram at an early age. But I guess it would be up to the women if they want to get tested because we obviously cannot force them to do it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/health/03brod.html?_r=&em

I read the article “A Breathing Technique Offers Help for People with Asthma” on the New York Times. It was published on November 2, 2009 by Jane E. Brody. The article was about a patient named David Wiebe, and he was having terrible asthma attacks, to the point where he had to choose to stay on steroids and lose his vision or just get off steroids and have very bad asthma attacks. Which he tried, but he ended up having several terrifying trips to the emergency room and he had no choice but to get back on steroids. Until, he discovered a technique that was used in the 50′s. The technique was called the Buteyko method, which instructs people to breathe shallowly and slowly through the nose, even when they speak and sleep, breaking the vicious cycle of rapid, gasping breaths, airway constriction and increased wheezing. The clients are also taught how to deal with stress and how to exercise without hyperventilating and to avoid foods that in some people can provoke an asthma attack.

“The Buteyko method works for him, but that doesn’t mean everyone who has asthma would respond in the same way,” said Dr. Lingat. They did a study on 384 patients and found that, on average, those who are diligent about practicing Buteyko breathing can expect a 90 percent reduction in the use of rescue inhalers and a 50 percent reduction in the need for steroids, within three to six months.

I think that the Buteyko method would be a great technique for everyone with asthma to try in the United States. It does have a good rating of reduction use in inhalers and reduction of steroid use. It would definitely help with not losing your vision. Not only that but other health issues that the steroids or inhalers might cause. Another thing is learning to breathe through your nose when you are speaking or eating to prevent asthma attacks. So I think it would be a great idea to bring it to the United States and to have everyone with asthma try it to see if it works great for them or not.

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1931116,00.html

The article I read was called “Are Artificial Sweeteners Really That Bad For You?” on Time. It was published on Tuesday October 20, 2009. The article was about a study that they did, if artificial sweeteners are good or bad for your health. They found that cyclamate was being put in beverages, snack foods, and drinks and it was widely used in the country as an artificial sweetener. Until they realized that cyclamate causes cancer, and they also noted that chicken embryos injected with the chemical developed extreme deformities, leading scientist to wonder if unborn humans could be similarly damaged by their cola-drinking mothers. Also, another study linked the sweetener to malignant bladder tumors in rats. After all this, they banned cyclamate from all food products. But they said that cyclamate is banned in our country, but not in other countries. They came out with another compound called aspartame and it was approved for use. They found this to be safe to our health, and it is also safe to drink if you don’t have any health problems.

Personally I think that some sweeteners are bad for you, just depending on your health and what your body is immune to. I was shocked that they found a substance in the sweetener that could cause cancer. If they didn’t catch this one right away, how do we know if the same problem will exist in our other foods that we eat today?

I think that this would really help our country if we were to research every food that we eat and make sure that every substance in there is tested and approved for us to eat. That way it is helping our country with cutting down on cancer or other health problems that we face today.

I read the article “Students Paid to Go to Class and Get Good Grades” published Monday October 12, 2009 on this website: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1929454,00.html. The article was about kids who drop out and fail, are getting paid to go to school, to try and help them succeed, by attending classes and also by getting good grades. But you know that there is always a catch to every good offer. The catch to this one is if they do well they can’t go spending their money on an Xbox or an iPod at the end of the year. It has to be used to finance a school related project or endeavor, such as a class trip abroad to improve foreign language skills, computer equipment for the classroom, and other school related subjects. Which they say is still not a bad deal for the students, and it will help them to succeed while they get treated to other activities that they would want to do or they enjoy doing at their own school and not go elsewhere. Personally I wouldn’t mind getting paid to go to class and get good grades. I also don’t think it would make a huge difference on how the money is being used towards school related subjects. It will help us to improve in what we want to learn more about and also give us the motivation.

I think it will help reduce the rate of students dropping out and it will benefit them by pursuing their dreams of what they want to become in life. Also, it will encourage them to finish and the outcome could benefit us as a country. But the program is being tested right now in France and it said that if the program succeeds, however, if the public opinion is against it, then it will not expand.

I read the article “How Xbox Can Help Fight Heart Disease.” It was published on Wednesday September 29, 2009 and was also put on this website: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1925332,00.html. The article was about playing video games could actually help fight heart disease. They did a research on it and found that an Xbox 360 works to detect heart defects and it also helps on preventing heart attacks. They say it has the potential to revolutionize the medical industry, because it is both faster and cheaper than the computer systems that are currently used by scientist to perform complex heart research.

When I read this article I was amazed on how an Xbox could fight heart disease. Usually they say that it is bad for you, but I guess that all changed when they researched it. I think that this would be good for people who cannot really afford the computer systems right now, especially during these hard economic times. Another thing is the patient could actually have fun playing the video games instead of just having to sit there and wait till the computer systems are done and they will just end up getting bored, or either end up getting inpatient. I think that they should just use this on all of the patients. It would help them with working their hearts and it would help them to be a little more active and maybe even enjoy a little fun. It will also help our country with the health problems that we face today. After all we all have to combine fun and work at the same time right?

On Thursday, September 10, 2009 the article “With Fewer Sellouts, NFL’s Blackout Rule under Fire” was published in Time Magazine and it was also posted on this website: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1921401,00.html. The article was about the 2009 NFL season; defending Super Bowl Champions the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Tennessee Titans, being broadcast on television. The only way that they would be broadcast on television was if they sold out on tickets at their stadium 72 hours prior to kickoff.

If they don’t sell out there stadium then the games will not be broadcast on television. This made a lot of fans angry. Not only fans were affected by this but also business owners. They argued that if they were not broadcast then they would begin to lose business. For example: most bars or even restaurants have television for their customers to watch the game while they eat or drink, which in most cases that’s how the smaller business company’s made most of their money. But when they heard about this event taking place, they were against it.

I personally don’t think that there should even be a rule for the football fans. I am not a big fan of football myself, but I believe that you should be able to enjoy the game even if it’s on television. Most people don’t have as much money now to go out and buy the tickets anymore because of the economy, so watching the game on television satisfies them for now. But I guess the situation affects most of the major football fans and for other people who are not, then we just look at it is nothing new to us.
